Who To Tell

Now that you know WHY you should tell, we want to help you think about WHO to tell. Think about this: which grownup do you feel MOST comfortable talking to? Who do you talk to when things are pink girlbothering you? For many kids, this will be their mom. For some it won’t. Do you think your mom will believe you and side with you over the person who is abusing you? If so, then tell your mom. If not, think about who you DO trust to help you. Maybe it’s your grandma. Or an aunt? Maybe you have a teacher or guidance counselor at school who you feel comfortable talking to. Or maybe its a friend’s mom?

If you can’t think of any grownup you trust, then the best choice is to call the ChildHelp Hotline. The Hotline people are friends of ours who are used to talking to kids who are being abused. Their number is 1-800-4-A-CHILD. You can call them and say you saw their name on Just Tell’s website and they will talk to you about what happened to you. ChildHelp can also help you call people to come help you. If you don’t have a grownup you trust, this is probably the best way to get the abuse stopped. But you can also call them just to talk and you don’t even have to tell them your name if you don’t want to. Here are some kids’ stories about telling. There are stories by kids who were believed by the first person they told, and some who weren’t.

What we want to tell you is that its really important to try to choose a grownup who you think will help you. But if the grownup you tell does not help you, PLEASE tell another grownup-- or call the hotline. And if you feel like you are in any danger, please call 911 and let the police help you.
